In this short video, Dr Abha Chikarsal, a GP practising primarily in skin cancer medicine in Queensland, talks about her journey as a doctor and how she arrived where she is today.

Dr Chikarsal speaks about why she pursued a special interest in skin cancer medicine and why she thinks any GP practising in Australia should have the skills to diagnose and treat skin cancers.

"I get this sense of empowerment out of something very basic in the Australian medical system."

She says she enjoys diagnosing and treating skin cancers in her practice without always needing to refer patients onwards for expert care, as she can help save her patients time and money and reduce the burden of skin cancer in Australia.

Dr Chikarsal goes on to discuss some of the challenges she faces in her everyday practice, and how having a common break time with her colleagues allows her to discuss and overcome some of these challenges.

"The advice I have for other doctors is to have the knowledge base so you can do things accurately and with confidence."
