In this latest video update, Dr Vincenzo Piccolo deep dives into the dermoscopic features of infantile haemangiomas.

Infantile haemangiomas are benign vascular tumours that typically appear within the first few weeks of life. They undergo a rapid growth phase followed by a slow involution over several years. Accurate diagnosis is crucial to distinguish them from other vascular anomalies and to determine the appropriate management strategy.

In the video below, Dr Piccolo emphasises the role of dermoscopy in identifying characteristic patterns of infantile haemangiomas, such as:

  • Red lacunae: Well-demarcated, round to oval red areas corresponding to dilated blood-filled vascular spaces.
  • White lines: Linear white structures that may represent fibrous septa within the lesion.
  • Peripheral vascular structures: Fine, linear vessels at the periphery, indicating active proliferation.

Walking through real patient cases, Dr Piccolo explores how these dermoscopic features can assist doctors in differentiating infantile haemangiomas from other vascular lesions like port-wine stains or pyogenic granulomas.

He further underscores the importance of dermoscopy in enhancing diagnostic confidence, monitoring lesion evolution over time, and guiding treatment decisions, especially in atypical presentations.
