Introduction: History of dermoscopy with Dr Marghoob

Before you master the tool, understand how it evolved.

Dr Marghoob opens the Masterclass with a sweeping yet practical introduction to how dermoscopy transformed skin cancer detection. This session connects historical context with modern clinical relevance — showing how early limitations shaped today's techniques and what that means for your diagnostic lens.

Dermoscopy & light: How devices shape diagnosis (NPD, PD, UVFD) with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Polarised, non-polarised, UV — your light source changes what you see.

This session breaks down how different light modalities reveal (or hide) key diagnostic features. You’ll learn how to match device choice with lesion type, how to interpret artefacts, and why even experienced dermoscopists sometimes miss the obvious — not because of the eye, but the light.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #1

Put your pattern recognition to the test with live clinical cases. You’ll vote, learn, and debate — and sometimes be surprised.

Introduction, surgical setup and consent with A/Prof Tony Dicker

The difference between a smooth surgery and a medicolegal headache starts here.

This session walks you through what many GPs overlook: setting up for surgical success before the first cut. From optimising your theatre space to obtaining bulletproof informed consent, Tony will share what he has learned from years of real-world surgical practice — including the details that protect you legally and help patients feel confident in your care.

10.30am Morning tea
11.00am

Histopathology correlates with Dr Marghoob

If you don’t understand what the pathologist sees, you’re only doing half the job.

In this session, Dr Marghoob walks you through dermoscopic-clinicopathologic correlation using real-world examples. You’ll leave better equipped to interpret dermoscopic clues through the lens of histology — a must for making confident decisions.

NMSC: Dermoscopy's role in non-melanoma skin cancers with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Dermoscopy isn't just about melanoma — it's a game-changer for BCC and SCC too.

This session explores how dermoscopy can change your surgical plan, reduce unnecessary biopsies, and improve detection of aggressive subtypes. Clinical insights meet procedural impact in this essential talk for skin cancer GPs.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #2

Face off with your peers on tough BCC/SCC pattern challenges. Discuss, dissect, and defend your diagnostic choices.

Ellipses, wedges, grafts, and advancement flaps with Dr Tony Azzi

Not all excisions are equal — and neither are their scars.

In this high-yield session, you’ll sharpen your skills in the advanced techniques that underpin successful closures: from refined ellipses to complex grafts and advancement flaps. Dr Azzi will walk through where these techniques work best (and where they don’t), and how to plan for tension-free, cosmetically elegant outcomes — especially on the face.

12.30pm Lunch
1.30pm

The universe of naevi with Dr Marghoob

Benign doesn’t mean boring — but it can mean confusing.

Explore the full spectrum of naevus patterns, including rare and atypical variants that mimic malignancy. Learn to classify confidently and avoid over-biopsying the harmless or missing what matters.

The universe of melanoma with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

It’s not one disease — it’s a spectrum of biological chaos.

A sophisticated, pattern-based deep dive into how melanomas present differently across body sites, subtypes, and stages. From slow-growing in situ to aggressive nodular forms, you’ll gain new appreciation for what makes melanoma so dangerous — and so deceptive.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #3

How well do you know melanoma’s visual language? It’s time to find out.

Rotation and transposition flaps with Dr Tony Azzi

Sometimes skin needs to move sideways to heal well.

Learn to design, execute, and troubleshoot more advanced flap techniques that offer flexibility in challenging anatomical areas. Dr Azzi will unpack the decision-making process behind rotation and transposition flaps, and show how to maximise tissue movement without compromising function or cosmesis.

3.00pm Afternoon tea
3.30pm

Mimickers with Dr Marghoob

Not everything that looks scary is malignant — and not everything benign looks safe.

This is your visual literacy bootcamp. Learn to differentiate common and uncommon dermoscopic mimickers of melanoma, BCC, and other suspicious lesions. Essential for daily decision-making and diagnostic confidence.

The other cancers with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Merkel cell, porocarcinoma, adnexal tumours — they’re rare, but you’ll see them eventually.

This session tackles the ‘zebras’ of skin cancer with clear pattern insights, clinical context, and what to look for when lesions don’t behave like the usual suspects.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #4

Rare and rogue lesions go head-to-head — who sees what others miss?

Island flaps, technical flaps, and nail matrix biopsy with Dr Tony Azzi

If you’ve never biopsied a nail matrix, this is the session that will change that.

Here we go beyond the basics to explore the technical finesse needed for island flaps, bilobed and interpolation flaps, and working in high-risk or anatomically challenging areas. Nail matrix biopsy, a rarely covered but critical diagnostic tool, will be demystified with practical tips, visuals, and case insights you won’t get in standard courses.

5.00pm End of day 1

Day 2: Saturday, 16 August 2025

Facial lesions with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

On the face, patterns shift and rules break.

Facial skin comes with unique anatomy and dermoscopic distortions. This session refines your eye for facial-specific clues, helping you catch in situ melanoma and differentiate pigmented BCC from solar lentigines.

Volar lesions with Dr Marghoob

Palms and soles have their own rules — ignore them at your peril.

You’ll revisit parallel ridge patterns, ink test pitfalls, and common misdiagnoses. Perfect for anyone who’s ever doubted a lesion on the sole.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #5

Put your palm and face skills to the test. Get ready for some pattern curveballs.

Complications and tips
with A/Prof Tony Dicker & Dr Tony Azzi

Every great proceduralist has faced complications — the best ones know how to manage them.

This session is a frank, case-based discussion on real-life surgical complications: infection, wound dehiscence, poor healing, and cosmetic surprises — and how to pre-empt, manage, and learn from each. Expect practical recovery strategies, documentation tips, and insight into when to intervene versus when to wait.

10.30am Morning tea
11.00am

Nail lesions with Dr Marghoob

Pigmented nail bands can be career-defining — if you get them wrong.

This focused session explains when to worry, what to biopsy, and how to spot melanonychia clues that signal serious disease. A must for high-confidence hand and foot diagnostics.

Creepy crawlers: Arthropod dermatoses with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Not all lesions are neoplastic — some are alive.

Scabies, larva migrans, and other parasitic patterns show up in dermoscopy more than you think. Learn what to look for (and how to unsee it later) in this fun but surprisingly practical session.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #6

Bugs, bites, bands — dermoscopy gets weird. Let’s see who knows what’s what.

Case reviews & clinical desigion-making with A/Prof Tony Dicker & Dr Tony Azzi

This is where theory meets the grey zones of real clinical work.

A collaborative, interactive review of challenging surgical cases — where the "right" approach isn’t always obvious. See how two seasoned proceduralists tackle decision-making under real-world constraints, and get their insight into alternate strategies, flap choices, and closure risks.

12.30pm Lunch
1.30pm

The difficult to diagnose melanomas with Dr Marghoob

These are the ones you’ll lose sleep over.

Ash will share some of the toughest melanomas he’s ever seen — subtle, atypical, and easily missed. What separates good clinicians from great ones is knowing what to do when the lesion just doesn’t fit the rules.

The other benign tumours with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Sebaceous, eccrine, neural — benign doesn’t mean irrelevant.

This session helps refine your positive ID skills for lesions you don’t need to cut — but need to understand. It’s how to avoid unnecessary excisions and patient anxiety.

Kahoot! Interactive quiz #7

If it’s not malignant, what is it? Pattern ID showdown: benign edition.

Rotation flaps (practical) with A/Prof Tony Dicker & Dr Tony Azzi

From planning arcs to executing curves: hands-on mastery of rotation flaps.

In this practical session, you’ll apply what you've learned about rotation flaps in a guided, step-by-step environment. Practise precise planning, flap elevation, and layered closure — with feedback from expert supervisors on how to improve your outcomes.

3.00pm Afternoon tea
3.30pm

Lentigo maligna: shifting paradigms with Dr Marghoob and A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

The rules are evolving — here’s what you need to know.

From diagnosis to dermoscopy, new research and patterns are changing how we identify and treat lentigo maligna. Join two global leaders as they walk through the latest thinking, patterns, and grey zones.

Limitations of dermoscopy: When you need more (RCM, biopsy, follow-up) with A/Prof Navarrete-Dechent

Dermoscopy is powerful — but it’s not perfect.

In this closing session, we explore when to stop looking and start testing. Learn when and how to integrate reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), biopsies, or follow-up protocols when dermoscopy alone isn’t enough.

Kahoot! Interactive challenge

The ultimate test of what you’ve learned — from tricky melanomas to mimickers and more.

Transposition and island flaps (practical) with A/Prof Tony Dicker & Dr Tony Azzi

These are your surgical power tools — now you’ll learn to use them properly.

You’ll walk through flap design, tissue mobilisation, and closure for both transposition and island flaps. With high-fidelity models and immediate feedback, this session helps transform complex theory into confident clinical execution.
